Founded in 2017, PHRC’s goal is to perform basic science and translational research to develop solutions, cures, and products to treat and prevent hearing loss and hearing loss-related disorders, as well as to develop more general solutions for neuroscience-based disorders, according to PHRC Director Dr. Thanos Tzounopoulos. “We are well poised and positioned to drive research and innovation in the hearing and neuroscience space and become the top hearing research team in the country,” he says.

The vision is to lead in academic excellence and innovation in hearing research. The mission is to perform top-notch basic science research and education to drive translation and innovation in therapeutics, neuroprosthetics, gene therapy, and regeneration.

“Another pillar of our research success is the Pittsburgh Hearing Research Center (PHRC). With over $5 million in annual funding from the NIH, NSF, DOD, and foundation grants, the PHRC is among the strongest hearing research programs in the country. In collaboration with the Department of Ophthalmology, we recently launched a new PhD certificate program in Hearing and Visual Sciences to provide dedicated training for PhD students across the University of Pittsburgh.”  -Dr. José P. Zevallos, Chair of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery

The goal of the graduate certificate in Hearing and Vision Sciences (HVS) program is to train the next generation of hearing and vision scientists in basic and translational research.

“The goal of the HVS graduate certificate will be accomplished by offering additional coursework and opportunities for collaborative research and mentorship with basic and translational hearing and vision researchers, and we have many outstanding hearing and vision scientists here at Pitt.” -Dr. Thanos Tzounopoulos, Vice Chair of Basic Science  Research, Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery

T32 Training Grant

T32 Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Training Grant Focused on Auditory and Vestibular Neuroscience

The department of Otolaryngology and PHRC, and in collaboration with the department of Neurobiology, offer the T32 grant "Training in Auditory and Vestibular Neuroscience" to support the stipends and fellowships as well as some of the research costs of graduate students and postdocs in affiliated faculty laboratories. The research-oriented program aims to help students develop into outstanding interdisciplinary auditory and vestibular scientists through training in basic neuroscience and the clinical aspects of hearing and balance disorders.

The program brings together a group of many preceptors spanning the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University committed to training scientists who are interested in auditory and vestibular neuroscience research.
